Welcome to my Blog

Welcome to my official blog. If you're looking for something in particular, you might want to type keywords into the search feature on the left-hand side of the page. And I've added a BLOG INDEX on its own page (a bit more complete than the one below) to make it easier. Poking around is also encouraged.

And please do leave comments! Don't be confused by the "author" field in the comment form. When you are writing a message to me and my readers, you are the author. (Nice role reversal, huh?)

Join Me in a Workshop

On August 28th and 29th, I'm going to be conducting a "weekend intensive" workshop.  And, oh, believe me.  I don't call it intensive for nothing.  Unlike many of my other workshops, this will be specifically geared to beginning and intermediate writers.  Think of it as a place to feel welcome no matter what your skill and experience level.

It will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, with an hour lunch break both days. Each participant will receive no less than one hour of group attention to his or her work-in-progress (time a standard critique group just doesn’t have).  We’ll cover story arc, characterization, self-editing, dialogue, great beginnings, great voice.  If you’re brand new, and have never experienced a critique group, this weekend will help get you started.  If you’ve spent time in critique groups, it will help you make sense of the feedback you’ve been receiving.

The fee is $150, for what will amount to 14 hours of instruction.

This workshop is a fundraiser.  All proceeds will go to LandWatch San Luis Obispo County, whose mission is to: deliver to future generations an unspoiled legacy of our natural world through grassroots activism; enforce existing laws; promote sound environmental and land use legislation; and educate people to take responsibility for the earth's ecosystems and resources.

I live in (and the workshop will take place in) Cambria, California (USA, I should probably add).  And the vast majority of you do not live in Cambria.  But if you're in California, or the west, or are looking for a getaway...it's a nice town to visit for a weekend.  Right on the ocean.  Lots of restaurants and inns for the traveler.

If you're interested, just go to the contact page and let me know.  And if you know someone who might be interested, please pass it on.

Thanks.

Hi Catherine,

Wow! What a wonderful event. I would love love to come and work with you Alas, I start the very first day of my new job teaching conflict resolution and service learning K-8th grade August 30th. My wheels are turning but I doubt I could get back to Los Angeles in time.

Please say you'll do this again?

Peace and sparkles to you,
Martine

Catherine,

I'm so excited to hear about this! I was taking a look at your site because I'm participating in an upcoming book tour for "Jumpstart the World" and wanted to take a look at some of your other books. I was shocked to find out you live in Cambria! I live in SLO and am seriously considering this workshop now. Thank you so much for posting about it! I can't wait to review your book as well.

I haven't heard from you about the workshop. Is it going to happen? Maggie and I are in if it is. How do we pay?
