Welcome to my Blog

Welcome to my official blog. If you're looking for something in particular, you might want to type keywords into the search feature on the left-hand side of the page. And I've added a BLOG INDEX on its own page (a bit more complete than the one below) to make it easier. Poking around is also encouraged.

And please do leave comments! Don't be confused by the "author" field in the comment form. When you are writing a message to me and my readers, you are the author. (Nice role reversal, huh?)

A Giveaway for Writers

Many of you know that my friend Anne R. Allen and I co-authored a nonfiction book for writers that came out this year. It's called How to be a Writer in the E-Age...And Keep Your E-Sanity. It's getting lovely reviews on the bookseller sites, and the writers I know who have picked up a copy have good things to say.

For those of who who don't know Anne (and I'm guessing most of you do, at least by way of her accomplishments), she is a highly successful publishing industry blogger. Her blog, Anne R. Allen's Blog...with Ruth Harris, has garnered numerous awards and is quickly becoming a leading go-to source for up-to-the-minute industry news. So the match was a good one in terms of what we had to offer to our fellow writers, especially those on the newer end of the process.

Now Anne and I are teaming up to bring you some free copies of How to be a Writer. Here's what Anne is announcing on her blog today:

Catherine Ryan Hyde and I have written a handbook for beginning writers called HOW TO BE A WRITER IN THE E-AGE…AND KEEP YOUR E-SANITY. It doesn't favor either traditional or self-publishing and has lots of advice for both routes.

In honor of the holidays, Catherine and I are running a promotion this week of HOW TO BE A WRITER. We're giving away THREE PAPERBACK COPIES and THREE E-BOOKS-any format: Nook, Kindle, Kobo (the ebooks come with free updates.)

Anybody who would like to be eligible for the free give-aways, just mention "free book" in the comments. If you go over to Catherine's blog and comment there, you'll get your name in twice. The contest will go until 9 PM next Saturday, December 15th. Winners will be announced on this blog next Sunday.

"This blog" means Anne's blog, but I'll announce the winners here as well.

Now, I'll say the same thing as Anne, but in reverse: If you're one of my regular blog readers, or found your way here from a social media link, leave a comment with the phrase "free book" below. Then, do stop by Anne R. Allen's Blog and leave a comment with the phrase "free book" there, too. That way you'll have two chances. And if you're interested in winning the book, you'll love Anne's blog. So do take a look at what she does for writers while you're there.

Good luck!

Free book. pBook. Grazie!

The post is up at my blog now. Already three people want the paperback. I guess paper is more popular than trend-seekers would have us think? :-) Alas, I just found out it's not on Kobo yet. So Kobo owners, we'll have to work that out. But we're good for Nook and Kindle and most ereaders.

Thanks for the info in your blog and for sponsoring the "free book" drawing. I'm hoping to move from short stories to novels...and am in the midst of deciding whether to go the traditional route or indie. Regards, Walt.

Thanks, Stella and Walt. You have successfully entered twice.

And Anne, there are certainly many not ready for ebooks. But their numbers seem to be shrinking. Plus I wonder if the pbook being $9.99 makes it seem like a more valuable prize. If so, I'd like to remind people that the ebook comes with free twice-yearly updates. And the pbook...does not. Because you really can't do that with a pbook. Which is why I think people will love ebooks once they've given them a good, fair try.

I read online today about a charity that sends kids in underprivileged areas ereaders loaded with *thousands* of ebooks. Try that with pbooks, and the postage and storage costs would bring the whole idea crashing down.

Free book! Oh yeah!

Loved the post. Would love to receive the free book. Either version is good with me! Thanks for the chance!

Thanks Laura and Maegan. Hope you signed up on Anne's blog as well, because you might as well get two chances.

I'll take that to mean that whatever we're giving away you wouldn't mind winning.

"Free Book" - to get that out of the way - Kindle.
New-ish to the world of creative writing - business only, boring.
Am eager to learn and this (along with Anne's, site) seems like a great place to immerse myself
in the learning process.
Thank you for what I feel will be an enlightening experience.

Thanks, Allen. Good luck in the giveaway and with your writing goals.

Paper is sometimes easier than ebook. You can highlight it and quickly thumb through it in ways that ebooks still don't quite seem to capture. But the book sounds interesting and informative.

Do you want your name entered in the giveaway?

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCatherine

Well I have both an e-copy and a ahard copy of How to bea Writer, so could I possibly donate my free book to someone else if I win? No biggie if not, I'll just quietly withdraw and let someone else have a chance to get this awesom book. *grins*

Now to go read Anne's blog....

Free book. Kindle. I'd love the opportunity to save my esanity. Just hope it's not too late. And thank you for giving us two chances to win. So now I'm hopping over to Anne's blog.

December 14, 2012 | Registered CommenterCatherine

Hello Catherine, I see you're kindly giving away free books again. How lovely... yes please.
I've just read back to back, Don't Let Me Go, Walter's Purple Heart, and When you Were Older (real books!) and have my Kindle loaded with Diary of a Witness ready for my trip to Iceland to see the Northern Lights tomorrow. I just can't get enough of your writing! Best wishes for a happy Christmas, Alison Flower

December 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAlison Flower

Hi Alison. Ah, I envy you those Northern Lights. They are on my bucket list. Take a minute to go over to Anne's blog and get a second entry while you're at it. And good luck!

December 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCatherine

I never have enough to read - the world keeps getting in the way.
Would love a copy.
